Be Grateful for Your Mom

Mother’s Day as it is widely celebrated today on the 2nd Sunday of May originated in the United States. It was first celebrated in 1908 by Anna Jarvis when she conducted a memorial for her mother in her church, and by 1911, all states in the U.S. celebrated the day.

In the Philippines, Mother’s Day was also celebrated in the country. It was introduced during the American colonial period when the Filipinos were exposed to much of American culture. To this day, the country still honours the 2nd Sunday of May as Mother’s Day.

Despite the claim by some quarters that this day has become commercialized like Valentine’s Day, many people take the tradition quite seriously. It is after all the one day in a year to express your thanks to your mother. As Filipinos are known to put so much value in the family, this tradition will be here to stay.

Your Mom Deserves Some Major Pampering

Mothers more often than not, juggle many responsibilities at the same time. They can be breadwinners while at the same time managers of the household. Most of the time they do the heavy lifting in the house – cooking, cleaning, doing the laundry, and taking care of the kids. Add all of these physically draining activities to the burden of providing for the family and you will have a burnt-out mom.

Here are some ideas to give your mom a much-needed break from all of these, even for just a while. Each one assumes one thing – you must be able to give your mother some time for herself. This means arranging for someone else to take on the household chores or take care of the kids. And it will be much better if this is done with the help of everyone in the family.

1. Give her time for herself, even just at home.

Sometimes, moms get overwhelmed by all the things they need to do. That is why it is important to give them some serious alone time. Dad or any of the older siblings can take care of the chores for a day. You can then plan to get out of the house and leave Mom to herself.

If you can, try and set her up with her needs before you leave. Such as prepping her lunch or snacks for her alone time. Or maybe even get her favourite bottle wine for her to enjoy.

2. Arrange a visit to a day spa

Beauty and wellness are important for mothers. And mothers who are able to take care of themselves can give more time to taking care of others. Now is the best time for mothers to get some pampering.

During this time of the year, offers abound that entice you to get a day spa package for your mom. Compare each package well and choose one that best fits your mom’s personality. Or better yet, get one that allows her to choose the treatments she wants.

If your mom wants to stay at home, she can still have her spa day. There are spa services who can bring the experience in your own home and can offer personalized services as well.

3. Give her the gift of beauty.

Mothers usually forget to take care of themselves in the beauty department. This does not only cover the use of make-up and other beauty enhancers. More importantly, it has to do with basic skin care. If your mom does not have a basic skin care regimen she follows, maybe it’s time for you to introduce her to some. The most basic is really proper cleansing, toning, and moisturizing.

Check out the latest skincare trends that most women swear by. For example, the Koreans introduced the use of face masks to skin care, and many have tried them. They are not too expensive compared to Western facial care products so it will be easy for your mom to use it regularly.

If your mom or you are an all-natural “freak,” there are a lot of skin care products that use natural and local ingredients. Most of them come in sets so its easier for consumers to choose.

Treat Your Mom Right

4. Take her to her favourite restaurant.

Mother’s Day is a good excuse for a treat. If you don’t know it yet, find out what kind of food your mom loves. If she has a particular restaurant which she considers her favourite, make a reservation beforehand and take her out to lunch or dinner.

5. Try new things with her.

Whether your mom is the adventurous type or not, convince her to try something new. It is always refreshing to get out of one’s comfort zone and try new things. When it comes to food, the best bonding times you can experience with your mother is when you try out a new cuisine or the latest food craze. This can also mean getting her to do something she has not done before.

6. Take her on a trip.

If you have some mileage saved up, it’s time to use them to plan a trip with your mother. Even if you don’t have any, there are plenty of ways to go on a quick vacation. You will find a lot of travel deals online, from packaged tours to cheap air tickets and accommodations. If you cannot take a trip exactly on Mother’s Day, plan it for a later date, which should give you more time to prepare.

For the budget conscious, you can take your mom on a day trip. From Manila, there are many interesting day trip options in the provinces of Rizal, Laguna, and Batangas. Just make sure you choose the one that will pique her interest, and not yours.

Gifts From the Heart

7. Books and music for your mom.

Nothing else can show how much you know her than being able to pick out a book or music that she will love. The trick is finding out what she likes to read, which you can do by taking the time to listen to her when she talks and shares. Then head on down to a bookshop or go online to hunt for a book you think she will love to read.

Music need not be expensive as well. Digital music can be bought online, which you can then download to her smartphone. Just make sure you show her how to access it. Why not throw in some Bluetooth speakers to enhance her listening experience.

8. One of a kind accessories.

There is a growing trend among local businesses for customization and personalization of accessories and other items. Take for example leather craft stores which offer the stamping of one’s initials onto bags and wallets. Some offer bespoke services, which allows you to choose the colour of the bag. Just find out what your mom’s favourite colour is and presto!

9. Give her a gift that she will use.

Most of the time, it’s difficult to find the perfect gift especially for a mom who has everything. But if you truly want to give her something that she will have a use for, you need to do a lot more digging.

For example, moms who are gadget savvy may need an organizer for her adoptors and cables. Or a mom who travels a lot would appreciate those travel cubes that can make packing for a trip a breeze. Health-conscious moms who are always on the go will find a portable smoothie maker convenient.

10. Give her the gift of learning.

Is your mom the type of person who thirsts for new knowledge all the time? Or maybe she wants to go out and socialize with other women? If this is the case, enrolling her in one-day workshops will surely be fun. Find out what kind of workshops are available in your community. This can range from arts and crafts workshops, culinary workshops, and even self-improvement workshops.

Wellness workshops can also be an option for moms who need time to decompress and de-stress. Yoga or Pilates classes would fall under these.

It’s the Thought That Counts

Mothers often show how much they appreciate their kids and how proud they are of them. On Mother’s Day, it will be your turn to do so. One does not have to spend much to celebrate this important woman. It can be as simple as a single flower presented with breakfast or a meal lovingly prepared. Or a shared meal with the whole family gathered together.
